I spent the last few months working on adapting this great concept by Konsta Nikkilä into 3D! My main goal with this project was to improve my cloth/armor sculpting and real-time grooming skills and to push this character through the entire pipeline (including rigging and full asset integration into UE5). Using the advanced skeleton plugin helped a lot with this and made animating her a lot of fun!
The cinematic shot is rendered in Unreal Engine 5 using raytracing and utilizes ChaosCloth with a proxy cloth set-up to simulate her clothing and hair.
I immensely enjoyed working on her hair, especially since my previous experience with hair cards was limited to straight hair. Diving into this subject and learning to approach textured/curly hair felt very rewarding. A big shoutout to this great tutorial (https://www.artstation.com/artwork/xD0bPm) by Hazel Brown which provided a great foundation for me to figure out how to approach her hair!
The model is ~96k triangles, 25k being just the card groom.
It uses the following materials:
– Body: Two sets of 4k textures
– Clothing and weapons: Four sets of 4k textures
– Hair: One set of 4k textures
– Eyes: Two 4k textures (diffuse and normal for the eyeball), and one 1k normal map for the cornea all using the same layout
I started this project almost exactly 5 months ago but had some jobs (and vacation) in between, so the actual work time was a bit less than 3 months.
A BIG thank you to everyone who followed my progress on this and encouraged me along the way, be it with helpful advice or compliments! I’m super grateful to have connected with so many people while working on this.
ALSO do check out Konsta’s great work on (for example) Twitter: https://twitter.com/konstanikkila! Huge thanks to him as well for providing a back view and sharing some of her lore with me (and allowing me to model her!).
