Perhaps you have been thinking about becoming a character artist for games. Luckily for you, J Hill has some useful tips to get the job.
The world is full of great artists and the sheer amount level of talent is insane. Therefore the competition in the game industry is tough. Yet everyone has a chance to get the job. As J Hill says, the key qualities are dedication and patience. Everything mixed with little bit of strategy. And trust J, he got his first character artist job about ten years ago.
“You don’t need to have a perfect portfolio, you don’t need to be famous on social media to get the job,” J says. Well, neither did he and yet the guy worked on games such as Titanfall, Apex Legends, Evolve or Back 4 Blood. He knows exactly how to make a killer portfolio.
While the portfolio doesn’t have to be perfect, it still is the key to land a job as a character artist. You may start with simple paper form, uploading your artwork on website such as Artstation or even create your own website – like the one J has. It went a long way from cringey attempt to really impressive showcase of his skills.
Don’t forget to bring a variety to your portfolio. Variety within what you want do. Make characters of different ages, genders, ethnicities, genres and so on. Moreover, be open to opportunities. Especially the unexpected ones. The biggest companies require years of experience. They won’t came to you by themselves, you need to create them.
Don’t lose hope and remember that there are more opportunities for game artists than ever before. So never lose a sight of having fun and keep sense of playfulness and curiosity.
