Scanning Big Green EGG in our Prague Studio
Before this summer began, our customer www.reut.sk delivered the largest grill from their portfolio – the BIG GREEN EGG large – for an upcoming marketing campaign using AR (Augmented Reality). The main purpose was to create a viral campaign on social media where potential customers could use their mobile devices to take pictures with this Big Green Egg in unusual places, like mountains, rooftops, cars, or gardens. The winner would receive this kind of grill.
Due to its size and shiny materials covering most of its surface, we had to use our cross-polarized setup to remove most of the shininess. After the initial photo shoot, focusing on texture and color information, we applied several scanning sprays to create a homogeneous coating on the object, which helped generate excellent contrasts for 3D processing.
Each part had to be sprayed separately to facilitate the next step – retopology.
The Photogrammetry Process
Photogrammetry, the process of creating a 3D object, requires many pictures to measure the distance between captured points/objects. Each picture needs careful overlapping of photographs of the object. Different angles and levels are crucial for the photogrammetry software we use to create 3D models.
For the BIG GREEN EGG model, we took over 1,400 pictures in RAW quality, amounting to 80GB of data. Our setup included five levels, with 72 pictures in each level, and three separate parts – the grill body, metal stand, and wood table. Each part was photographed twice, once with and once without the spray.
Our main camera was a Canon EOS R5 full frame, equipped with a 45-megapixel CMOS sensor. For reference photos, we used the Canon 5D Mark IV.
Creating the 3D Model
The next step was to use software to create a basic 3D shape of our object with mesh and texture. We used Reality Capture, which enables the creation of realistic 3D assets from captured photos. Each part was created separately.
The modeling process was done in Zbrush and took about 24 hours (3 man-days), as we had to create some parts from scratch, like strings and grips.
