The Portrait Challenge: Alex’s Journey to Mastery
Every artist knows that improvement comes through practice, and for digital sculptor Alex Carratalà, the best way to push his skills to the next level was through a bold personal challenge – studying portraits.
This ambitious goal wasn’t just about quantity; it was about refining technique, developing speed, and learning from every mistake along the way. With each sculpt, Alex aimed to push his understanding of form, anatomy, and expression, gradually honing his ability to capture the subtleties of the human face.
We’re thrilled that 3D.sk can be part of this journey, helping to showcase Alex’s achievements and share his progress with the world!

The goal is to keep my skills sharp, sculpting a believable portrait in the shortest time possible.

The Motivation Behind the Challenge
Like many artists, Alex reached a point where he wanted to level up. He realized that repetition and consistency were key to making progress. By committing to studying portraits, he was forcing himself to:
- Improve his speed and efficiency
- Experiment with different facial structures and expressions
- Learn to work without fear of failure
- Develop a stronger artistic eye for realism and stylization
Instead of focusing on creating a “perfect” sculpt each time, he embraced the process of trial and error, treating each portrait as a stepping stone to greater mastery.

I decided to break the rules for this one.

This portrait was very challenging for me. I wasn’t very focused early on and I’m not used to Asian facial features. So It basically took like ten times longer than intended as my brain was processing this portrait.
My personal goal is achieving the best result in the shortest time possible. Stopping earlier for the sake of speed would have meant failure in learning, consistency and quality.
Let’s see where this challenge takes us. Until the next one!

This one again took more time than I initially intended. Asian features is something that still escapes me, so again, I wanted to take a bit more time to stop and actually feel comfortable sculpting them.
