I always wanted to try out Arnold and see how far I can push things. When Sefki released his course last year I felt like it would be the perfect opportunity to learn from one of the best in the industry so I got my hands on it. This is my 3rd attempt at a portrait in Arnold and my first “finished” artwork with the renderer. I also want to thank Roger Margrini and Blu for answering some stupid questions and helping me out whenever I needed it.
One of the works I started, not this one, with Arnold proved to be quite the challenge and after 10 months on it I felt like I have to restart my eye in a sense. So I wanted to do a face that is familiar to me, which in turn would also show me if I had made any significant progress over the last several years of doing portraiture. Its the first work of mine that (to me ) resembles some photorealism. I never had any formal art education and I am mostly self taught, I do things my own way, so to me, this is a big milestone.
I am not giving up on my dream to achieve photorealism in realtime and I will comeback to Unreal Engine eventually, but I feel like I need to explore more from Arnold and offline rendering as it provides me the opportunity to really focus on small details and train my eye going further. Also just wanna say Charles Dance is such a terrific actor and I am really happy to pay a small tribute to him.
