- Weather Considerations: With near-freezing temperatures reducing flight time, we relied on backup batteries.
- Wind Conditions: Our small, lightweight drone handled turbulent winds, though stability was crucial for photogrammetry accuracy.
Thanks to careful planning and our sub-250g drone, we maintained control while capturing comprehensive imagery of the emblem.
Drone Mapping and Photogrammetry Workflow
Precision and image quality are at the core of accurate 3D reconstructions. Our workflow includes:
- Image Capture: 400 high-resolution (35 MP, 8K) photographs taken from various angles formed a “grid” around the emblem.
- Optimal Lighting: Overcast skies minimized harsh shadows and reflections, reducing the need for extensive post-processing.
- RAW Image Format: In challenging lighting scenarios, RAW format allowed flexibility in adjusting exposure and shadows during processing.
Constructing the 3D Model
Using RealityCapture, we processed the images to create a photo-realistic 3D model with incredible detail:
- Alignment Phase: The software matched key points across overlapping images.
- Dense Point Cloud: This phase generated an intricate cloud of spatial data for detailed modeling.
- Meshing and Texturing: We built a high-fidelity polygon mesh and applied a 16K texture to ensure lifelike detail.
- Cleanup: Reflective surfaces like glass and metal were corrected manually to patch “holes” in the mesh.
