Uncanny worlds, strange creatures and twisted tales await in the third volume of the Emmy-winning animated anthology from Tim Miller and David Fincher. Fincher’s Bad Traveling will take your breath away!

How was born Fincher’s animated debut Bad Traveling? Creator of Love, Death + Robots Tim Miller says: “if you were to say what makes animation film? My easy answer would be, when arguably one of the greatest living filmmakers of all time says, ‘I am going to spend my time making an animated film.’ That should tell you that medium has arrived.”
The director’s personality is undoubtedly important, but it is only part of the success. Would you say that the phenomenal director David Fincher animated for the first time on ‘Bad Travelling’? Certainly, there are many skilled people behind this an incredible animated short…
How it started
Legendary biomechanical designer H.R. Giger had to go to great lengths to satisfy Fincher’s imagination. Daniel did a minute test of the CG animation after Fincher and Tim Miller approved the design. They studied crabs and scorpions until they created a terrifying-looking design of a giant, slimy crab Thanapod. However, that was only a small part of the job. What about all the insanely realistic facial expressions and character movements?
The animated performances were motion-captured to get facial and body reference. The entire short was shot in the volume with reference cameras and a few props and set dressing. Fincher directed about 10 actors and stunt performers. They rehearsed and shot 300 master setups to get the range of emotions and movement for each character. All footage had to be approved by Fincher, and then the animators projected them into 3D models, influenced by the actors’ characteristics.
